From all accounts, Petrotilapia sp. "Chitimba Bay" is an uncommon Mbuna cichlid from Lake Malawi in East Africa. I've never seen them in any of the local pet/fish stores, nor have I bumped into any via the various aquarists I knew or aquarium societies I've participated in. It's a very full-bodied fish with nice colors, especially on the male with breeding. The females have a somewhat drab colour, but as a group they were a pleasant fish to keep.
In this short clip you will see that two of the trio had paired and were engaging in a spawning ritual in which the female was laying eggs and the male fertilizing them. Everything was going quite smoothly until another Lake Malawian cichlid, the alpha male of the cichlids in that tank, interrupted them. Thankfully, the female was able to hold the fry to maturity and I eventually donated fry to other hobbyists in the area in an attempt to ensure their availability locally.
The above fish in the video were purchased at an auction held in Pickering, Ontario by the Durham Region Aquarium Society. I purchased them on a whim as I had never seen these fish before. I had to conduct quite a bit of research to finally acquire some information and to secure the identification of these fish.
Hopefully, I'll bump into these fish again along my aquaria keeping travels...
If you've enjoyed the video then please share and like it.
