The Kitchener-Waterloo Aquarium Society Oktoberfish Show and Sale was today at a new location very nice Country setting good size show but the auction was on the disappointing side lasting about 3 hours only came back with 3 bags of new fish totaling 9 fish.
The auction started at 10 am and ended just before 2:30, so just over 4 hours.
There were less items in the auction, but like Lisa mentioned, other auctions are seeing a reduction in items as well. Most do not allow used equipment like old pumps, filters, heaters, gravel, lights and so on. Otherwise we would go back to the old days of finishing after 5, one year we went to 8pm. That is just too long, especially if you have to help clean up afterwards, put your show fish back in their aquariums, and put your newly purchased fish in your aquariums as well I think there was a good selection of fish to bid on I know of a few people who normally attend, but they were at the Catfish convention in Virginia, a bit of a conflict. since we had to move our event a week earlier.
Cichlids ... with great challenges come great rewards
I like to see the used items especially tanks and not setups just the tank as I only run sponge filters in most of mine I don't mind them running passed 6 pm having invested 7-8 hours of driving and bringing most of my cash home is disappointing.
The next one in MI orders pizza/pop around 6pm for the bidders to keep us bidding away I have put fish away many times after 2:00 am.
Looks like Iam going to be doing 16 auctions this year one more than last year but next year I will be cutting that back.
I'm with gtomike on the time aspect. One invests a lot of time in driving so who cares if it goes late. I enjoyed Oktoberfish and actually planned with my family that I wouldn't be home until 9pm. I was quite surprised when it ended early. Nevertheless, I'm planning on attending next year and hope to sell and show fish. I think the several changes and new location would've impacted the event. I'm sure next year will be even better. Windsor is in desperate need of an auction and show.
MCA is definitely my favourite American auction in our area. Knowing many of the guys helps and with gtomike making dolphin noises whenever they auction Cyrtocara moorii (Blue Dolphins) it is always a good time. WCCG should have 7 members there with jred, gtomike, Petr, Anthony, Marty, Bryan and myself attending.
Trying to recover from yesterdays MCA auction 6 of us made it over for 7 HOURS of nonstop cichlids and catfish crowd was way down because of the football game fish bags were down a good 200 but there was some outstanding fish on the tables.
I got some new corys, synodontis, plecos, angelfish, and south/african cichlids prices were high for a small crowd that mostly stayed till the end last 2 hours prices started to tumble and the group started to fill the coolers quickly making the exchange rate not an issue.
The club pulled off 3 wins in the raffle of fish and dry goods one more MI auction in 2 weeks then off to the EXTRAVAGANZA for more cichlids and catfish than you should be exposed too!!!
Holy moly... I am still recovering 5 days later from that event...
Who would have guess the Michigan vs Michigan State game would drain the crowd like that - only a bigger benefit for us Canadians. It was dollar days all day for me. Got some great species and added quite a few to the room. will hopefully post more about them later on
